Scott and Jeremy have posted what must be just about every photograph either has ever taken on flickr. Trei first brought this my attention on Saturday, and hooked us up with a pro account because he was so inspired by Scott (big thanks Trei!).
Bonus points for whoever can find the fattest picture of me!
I’ve been eating lots of Best Maid Pickles lately. You know the ones, the neon yellow ones that are really really cheap. You won’t find them in the refridgerated section.
But they are delicious. For me, they’re easier to eat because they resemble frogs much less than other "classier" pickles. Regardless of whether or not you care about my pickle consumption (I always feel compelled to tell Danielle when I’m in a pickle-eating phase, but I’m sure that not even she cares), you have to admit that whoever decided to place the little Best Maid girl logo of center on the lid is an unrivaled genius. Is there some sort of design award for third-rate grocery products? Because we have a winner.
After a few days in Fredonia, I finally got some WiFi, in the Reed Library on the Fredonia State Campus (thanks to Jim). We’ve been here since Saturday afternoon, after some problem travel. We got stuck in Chicago for a night on the way, and had to fight for a distressed traveller room at a Chi-town Holidome. O’Hare was a mad house, and someone almost knocked Kelly over in our race to the hotel shuttle. They ended up cramming 16 people into our 10 passenger van (with 3 in luggage space behind the back seat), and there was still an angry crowd left behind.
I hadn’t been in a Holidome for years; it was great, but we got there so late all of the resorty-type amusements were unplugged for the night. The good news was: it was Karaoke Night at McKenna’s, the Holidome Bar (sorry for the crummy interface, I promise there’s a payoff).
We met a few of the people, and they all were nice. Most of the regulars were really serious singers, but they took pretty kindly to those of us who were stranded, especially the stranded Belgians, who had never seen karaoke before.
Once we got in to Buffalo, we stayed with the Mulvilles and then Jenny and Meegan picked us up and brought us to Fredonia. Rob and Tam should arrive today and then we get started on wedding preparations. I’m actually hoping to get some work done now that I’m back online, and I’ll try to post some pictures a little later.
Now, I don’t want to turn this into another fruitless search for the Single-of-the-Summer-type quest, but I think it’s time to start looking for candidates for the 2005 Drink of the Summer.
Sandy introduced me to micheladas yesterday, and I think I’m hooked. It was kind of like a spicy, tangy fake iced tea with hint of beer flavor.
There doesn’t seem to be a real consistent recipe (the ones we were drinking were beer + an ounce or two of lemon juice + a vigorous dash of cayenne pepper, all over ice), and I look forward to spending the summer finding the right mix. Other recipes include ingredients like black pepper, Worcestershire, soy sauce, Tabasco, and tomato juice. I’m not sure about the tomato juice, but I can see the others contributing to a nice, savory summer drink.
I’ve always been a little nervous about mixing beer and wine with anything else (except for about 6 hours in 1997 when I thought vodka and red wine *ruled*), but the micheladas have me ready to try almost anything. I’ve seen Michael and Amy mix red wine and coca-cola; Tim said something about beer and sprite. Any other recommendations/reformulations?
Also, if anyone has any early candidates for Single of the Summer, please let me know. I never find out what it is until summer’s over. I’d suggest "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani, but that officially came out last winter.
